INTERNATIONAL AIR Transport Association members achieved their best year ever in 2005 in terms of safety, recording one accident for every 3 million flights. This is less than half the global average, according to IATA director general Giovanni Bisignani. “The IATA Operational Safety Audit (IOSA) is at the heart of our efforts for further improvement,” he said. “It is the first global standard for airline safety management and will, by the end of 2007, be a condition of IATA membership.” Already over 150 airlines are in the IOSA process - 70% of scheduled international traffic. “Governments are taking note of IOSA. The FAA accepts IOSA audit results for US airlines code-sharing with foreign carriers. Chile and Madagascar are making IOSA a condition of their certification process. And we are calling on governments around the world to make use of this great tool,” he said.
