SMALLER EXPRESS cargo companies are seeking functional, all-embracing software solutions that match those of the larger operators – and new technologies are making it possible. Johannesburg IT professional and developer of software solutions, Zaid Boomberg of Velocity Software Solutions (VSS), is poised to introduce a customised prototype to meet the needs of a specific client. The freight industry in general is demanding greater tracking and tracking on call, either through waybill numbers or scanning, he says. “It is possible for us to introduce a scanner-based system that is practical for the smaller operator and provides the most important features of tracking and tracing that are demanded by clients. That is the next level to which the prototype will take us.” Recently VSS announced a further improvement to its instant tracking and documentation processing software to include the new SAD documentation. Its real-time package was introduced about three years ago and has already been well received by both the courier and general cargo sectors, he said. The initial package has been steadily enhanced with new features as he has been called upon to provide affordable improvements. One of the key features of the programme is that it does not require a high level of IT to access information via telecommunications. It bunches information and then dispatches it and receives incoming information on a regular programmable basis. “We are also extending its features so that it can be accessed via a cell phone to further increase its reach and connectivity as a back-up to a landline or for areas where the fixed line option does not reach. “We believe that even clients should be able to access information on parcels via cell phone,” he added.
Cell phone access to info is next step for Velocity
