THE WORDS head count are going to play an increasingly significant role in the freight industry employment market this year, according to Lynn Ribton-Turner of Ribton-Turner Recruitment.
SA is renowned for not being up-to-speed on per capita productivity, she said, and for taking on extra staff to cover work overloads.
But in the intensely
competitive global freight industry, the number of heads must now fit the international norms.
For companies, this will put more focus on temps. From a staff point-of-view this will make multi-skilling a necessity for the future - and will inevitably mean individual staff having to take on greater pressure of work.
But, said Ribton-Turner, no matter how good and multi-skilled a staff you've got, this sort of pressure can ultimately lead to burnout.
The current situation, she added, is lots of job orders coming in - but no staff available to fill them
This, said Ribton-Turner, is a reversal of two years ago. There's now no surplus of good, skilled people in the marketplace.
All of which adds up, she concluded, to a buoyant year for freight recruitment.
