WITH THE shortage of skilled and professional drivers, more reliance is being placed on vehicle technology, a trend that is expected to continue, says Road Freight Association CEO Sharmini Naidoo. “Electronic solutions are making our industry safer, more compliant and far more efficient. From fleet management to freight management and driver productivity, manufacturers are constantly improving and refining these systems. “Tracking devices, reports, tachographs and on-board computers measure efficiencies. Speed, fuel consumption and driver tour of duty form an essential part of operational efficiency while tracking devices monitoring vehicles in hot spot areas play a vital role in minimising hijacking incidents,” says Naidoo. The RFA is in the process of arranging discounts with fleet management providers as well as the provision of a hosted integrated solution for its members.
