Exporters of food products to the United States need to keep a close eye on shelf life as the country applies strict regulation to what it allows. This is the advice of Grant McGregor, managing director of Taste Africa Foods, an exporter of a variety of perishable and other food products to markets around the world. “Most retailers in the US will not take produce if it does not have at least 50% of the original shelf life. The longer the shelf life of the product on arrival in the country, the better.”He said while this could easily seem small and inconsequential, it could lead to a product being turned away on arrival in the US.“Considering the transit time from South Africa to the US and the current delays due to congested ports – not to mention the logistical delays that can occur both for sea and air freight – it becomes critical to make sure the shelf life is correct.”Another important consideration for the export of all fast-moving consumer goods to the US is a recall procedure. “They are extremely strict on this. Not only do you need to have the procedure, but it is essential that exporters know the procedure works well. Don’t wait to put it to the test during a crisis.” McGregor said public liability cover was another must-have. “This is especially important in the North American market. Exporting without this cover is not advisable.” He emphasised the need for variety in the range saying most American buyers liked choice and versatility. “The buyer does not want to see just one product listed. Try to incorporate varieties and different flavours. You can always take away or add to this range as time goes by. The US is also very particular about ingredients that are allowed and it is advisable to do one’s homework, making sure there is a clear understanding of what can be used in the country and what is not allowed.”Coming from a small market such as South Africa, exporters need to keep in mind the size of the North American market. “There are many opportunities for exporters to the US, but it is a big market, and making sure one has enough product delivered on time requires careful production planning to ensure capacity, as well as reliable logistics.”
