A NEW coastal cargo and passenger service comes on stream in September this year linking Cape Town, Luderitz, Walvis Bay, St Helena and Ascension Island.
The RMS St Helena, managed by Andrew Weir Shipping, will provide a 23- day service in each direction.
Through its partners AWS is also able to offer regular transhipments from the UK via Walvis Bay to Luderitz. The multi-purpose service
e will cater for containers and breakbulk.
It’s a major upgrade for St Helena and Ascension Island which are now served on a three weekly basis from the UK via Walvis Bay instead of the current 3-monthly direct service.
AWS also operates a dedicated passenger handling office in Cape Town.
“If St Helena and Namibia are to grow an export industry and enlarge their tourism then shippers and travellers must trust the service, and the named date of calls well in advance is paramount,” AWS’s Captain Bill Langworthy told FTW.
“We believe the new service will provide mutual opportunities for business growth between South Africa, Namibia and St Helena.”
