NAMIBIA GAINED its independence from South Africa in 1990, but it was only 10 years ago that the country’s major harbour, Walvis Bay, was handed back to the nation.
To mark the 10th anniversary of that event, the Namibian government moved its annual Independence Day celebrations from the capital Windhoek, to Walvis Bay to recognise the progress achieved by the city and its major commercial enterprise, Namibian Ports Authority (Namport).
A new Namport office block was opened officially by the Minister of Works, Transport and Communication, Moses Amweelo.
With the harbour development having transformed Walvis Bay from a mere fishing port to one which now berths cargo and passenger liners - both on schedules and casual calls - Namport was recognised by a US study three years ago as the most efficiently run of Africa’s 26 port authorities.
FTW joined dignitaries to celebrate the milestone event in March. Leonard Neill filed the reports in this commemorative issue.
