IT'S HAPPY days for the growing number of users on the Nacala to Malawi line, which has improved beyond recognition compared to three years ago.
The volume of traffic is three times that of 1998 and in the last year the number of containers being moved has risen from 3 000 to 5 000 a year.
Hundreds of millions of rand have been spent on the line, but recently the port has also been getting attention, with three new forklifts in operation. The shortage of forklifts was the biggest problem at the port, says Dave Sly of Unifeeder in Harare.
The port is being privatised, which is another step in the establishment of a seamless service to Malawi, where the rail
system is already under private management.
