The Automotive Business Council (NAAMSA) has appointed Mncane Mthunzi as its new CEO as the industry confronts changing global trade relationships, supply chain transformation and growing competition for investment.
His appointment took effect on September 7.
NAAMSA President Peter van Binsbergen said the appointment came at an important time for the South African automotive industry.
“We are entering a period that will fundamentally determine the future structure and competitiveness of our sector and we require strong, decisive and strategic leadership to navigate it,” he said.
Mthunzi is a corporate leader, turnaround strategist and researcher who holds a PhD in economic inclusion. He has previously served as President of the Black Management Forum, CEO of the Consumer Goods Council of South Africa and COO of Edcon Group.
He also worked as strategy lead for the Red Tape Reduction Project in the Presidency.
Mthunzi understands the automotive industry’s contribution to manufacturing, exports, investment, employment and economic growth, Van Binsbergen said.
“His mandate is therefore much bigger than leading an industry association. It is about serving our members while helping shape the conditions under which one of South Africa’s most important industrial sectors can compete, transform and grow globally.”
Mthunzi said South Africa has established a globally significant automotive manufacturing industry supported by vehicle manufacturers, suppliers, dealerships, skilled workers and an established export platform.
“But we cannot assume that the successes of the past will automatically secure our future. The global automotive industry is changing rapidly and South Africa must compete decisively for the investment, technology, skills, markets and opportunities that will define the next generation of mobility.”
Mthunzi said his priority will be ensuring that NAAMSA remains an influential industry voice and advances practical measures supporting investment, growth, transformation and competitiveness.
His appointment concludes the leadership transition announced when COO Shinny Gobiyeza was appointed interim CEO in April. Gobiyeza will resume her former role.
