Average vessel turnaround time at the Port of Durban rose to its highest level of the year during the first week of September despite stable road and truck movements around the port.
Total vessel port call time increased by 26.5% week on week, from 6.86 days to 8.67 days, during the week ending September 6, according to the latest Crickmay Corridor Pulse Report.
The measurement covers the period from a vessel’s arrival at anchorage until its departure from the berth.
Crickmay placed the Johannesburg-Durban N3 corridor on “watch” because of the increase in vessel turnaround time. It advised operators to budget additional time for vessel calls at Durban.
However, pressure concentrated on the marine side of the logistics chain. Heavy motor vehicle dwell times in the port precinct remained relatively stable while average transit time on the Johannesburg-Durban road corridor improved by 3.1% week on week, declining from 13.9 to 13.4 hours.
