IN WHAT has been dubbed the biggest marine insurance claim ever, 2 500 containers were lost overboard when a massive fire gutted the Hyundai Fortune en route from Singapore to Rotterdam recently. A further 1000 or more of the ship’s 5000 containers are believed to have been lost. According to Cargonews Asia, the fire was probably caused by an explosion of fireworks in a container. It was towed to Salalah in Oman following the explosion. The Hyundai Fortune left Gwangyang in China in March and made calls at Busan, Kaohsiung, Hong Kong and Singapore on its way to Rotterdam. It was part of the New World Alliance Asia-Europe Express (AEX) service.
