Zimbabwe's struggling agriculture sector is facing yet another significant risk as high temperatures and low rainfall cause the country’s dam levels to drop.
According to the Zimbabwe National Water Authority (Zinwa), the country, which is already facing grave food shortages, has planned to turn to irrigated crops to mitigate the impact of the drought.
However, it is feared that the drop in dam levels will have a significant impact on the country's irrigation efforts.
Zinwa has reported that the average national dam level has dropped to 48.8% as of last week, and that finance minister Mthuli Ncube has set aside a budget to alleviate the crisis.
It includes funding for irrigation as well as dam construction. – Zoë van Rooyen
