The seven commercial ports in the SA ports system handled a lower volume of import and export containers (measured in numbers of TEUs) in March than in February.
According to the Transnet National Ports Authority (TNPA) port stats released to FTWO, the ports handled a grand total of 388 404 TEUs (full and empty; deepsea, coastwise and transhipment) in February, but this dropped to 366 653 TEUs in March.
Of these (and excluding empty, coastwise and transhipment boxes) the ports landed a total of 108 204 full, deepsea (import) boxes in March - down 6 911 TEUs on the 115 115 total in February.
Similarly, there was a downturn in exports, with the March total being 97 245 TEUs – 4 062 less than February’s 101 307 TEUs.
