THE SA freight and logistics industry is coming of age, according to Wendy Pain, head of Exclusive Personnel.
As we look into the future, she told FTW, opportunities seem to abound.
But the real question is: What are the customers thinking?
In Pain's experience, there are six main factors being investigated and implemented at present:
l Eliminate redundant activities - If it does not add value, outsource it, said Pain;
l Shorten the value chain;
l Define the business process - and make it available to the entire business;
l Standardise business processes;
l Take a team approach to problem solving - incorporating suppliers, customers and employees;
l Industry specific solutions.
To stay competitive in today's market, small and medium size organisations may have to pool their resources through mergers and acquisitions, Pain added.
The overall business strategy is going to have to include ensuring optimum allocation of human resources - and creating added value, she said. This by recruiting and retaining the best employees - and enabling them to acquire additional first-rate skills.
