DESPITE a 14,7% rise in container traffic volume from 1996 to 1998, liner carriers' total revenues dropped by 1,2%, according to a recently-published report.
Drewry Shipping Consultants' report, Container market Outlook - High Risk, High Stakes, Where's the Payback?, found that combined traffic in loaded containers for container shipping lines worldwide rose from 49 million TEU in 1996 to 5,6 million TEU in 1998.
Over the same period, total
revenues fell from US77,9 billion to $77 billion, with freight rates dropping 14%.
