World Customs Organisation (WCO) secretary general, Dr Kunio Mikuriya, has drawn attention to the need for Customs to develop data analytics skills and make greater use of data analytics as a key tool for more robust analyses.
A recent WCO workshop revealed that the massive amount of data generated by Customs was currently underused.
Mikuriya said that the use of data analytics could improve the way Customs administrations worked at both an operational and strategic level and could help them to gain a better understanding of the work they did, thus making customs more efficient and effective.
“Enhancing Customs’ ability to perform increasingly sophisticated analytics using the available data will become even more crucial in all future policy-making processes,” he added.
