Japanese shipping major, Mitsui OSK Lines (MOL) launched its new virtual reality (VR) system today which enables seafarers to virtually visit the car carrier, Beluga Ace.
According to MOL, the system, developed by Japanese virtual reality company NURVE, allows for seafarers to tour all areas of a ship which is difficult for in-person visits due to limited time frames, allowing for a simple grasp of various on-board areas.
This as cargo ships are being built larger and larger, with the Ace measuring 199.9 metres long and 32.2 metres wide.
Since last October, MOL has been working towards using VR technology as a way to replicate training scenarios and work operations with the aim of increasing safety awareness and eliminating on-board industrial accidents caused by unsafe behaviour.
