Good news for the Namibian freight
industry is that Australian company
Extract Resources has announced that its
subsidiary, Swakop Uranium, has received
environmental approval from Namibia’s
Ministry of Environment and Tourism for
its Husab Uranium Project.
Approval of the EIA and EMP is a
necessary step for obtaining a mining
licence for Husab, which is the fifth-largest
uranium-only deposit in the world. The
mining licence application was lodged with
Namibia’s Ministry of Mines and Energy
during December 2010.
Namibia’s freight industry has been
kept busy over the past few years with the
development of a number of uranium mines.
The bulk of the work lies in bringing
in the equipment for the mines – most
of which is imported through the port of
Walvis Bay, and which usually includes a
desalination plant.
Demand for uranium continues to grow
as the world switches from fossil fuels to
nuclear power for electricity generation.
Uranium mining opens opportunities for forwarders
