Telkom subsidiary Openserve has said that repairs to the West Africa Cable System (Wacs) undersea cable have been completed.
The restoration of the older Sat-3 subsea cable is currently underway and will be completed soon.
The Wacs cable connection was restored on September 6, a month after it was severed in a deep undersea canyon off the coast of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).
A suspected rockfall severed both cable systems, which connect landing stations north of Cape Town to similar facilities in Europe, along Africa’s west coast.
“The restoration work progressed well,” a Telkom spokesperson said.
The Léon Thévenin, a cable-laying vessel, left Cape Town harbour late last month with a crew and equipment to attend to the cable repairs off the coast of the DRC.
Openserve did not give details about when the older and lower-capacity Sat-3 cable will be repaired but, once both cables have been repaired, South Africa should experience relief from lags in internet connectivity.
However, most internet service providers have found alternative routes to sustain feed from Europe.
