Durban has more
than twice the
capacity of all
the other major
container terminals in the
southern African region put
together.
According to official
port statistics the container
terminals of Lobito, Walvis
Bay, Maputo, Beira, Nacala,
Dar es Salaam and Mombasa
have a combined capacity of
around 1.5 million twenty foot
equivalent units (TEUs) a year.
Durban can handle
3.6 million TEUs.
Shippers moving out-ofgauge
and project cargo are
also restricted by the lifting
capacity in the Mozambican
ports in particular.
There has been no incentive
to invest in heavy lifting
equipment in Beira because of
weight limitations on the road
leading out of the port.
This will change when
the bridges on the road have
been upgraded. Work has
already started.
