Exporters to Europe can save on freight costs by shipping LCL in a 40-foot container rather than loading their own 20-foot unit, according to Martin Schulze, chief executive officer of Contra Consolidations.“With the ocean freight rate on a 40ft container currently being lower than that of a 20ft, there is a renewed shift in shipping from FCL to LCL,” he told Freight News.“This trend is expected to continue as shippers can pass on this cost-saving benefit to their clients. Considering the current market and pricing, for many types of cargo there shouldn’t be a need to load a 20ft,” he advises.
