Safety first at new KN warehouse

KUEHNE & Nagel’s new warehouse facility has 13 doors, nine of them equipped with dock levellers. One has a 6.5m side-loading bay allowing for the handling of extra large packages.
A unique fire sprinkler system is positioned at every third level from the floor of the racking, giving ultimate protection to packed goods in the case of fire.
“We’ve moved in every direction to ensure that safety is of the highest order,” says warehouse GM Graham Smit. “We have security inside and outside the warehouse, colour cameras installed at all strategic points and a medical room is being built into the area.”
The staff moved into the facility when K&N opened its new headquarters at the end of September, but spent the remaining three months of 2003 undergoing training.
But even with the vast new space available Smit is planning expansion. A further 5 000m2 space is available adjacent to the existing facility. Construction will probably begin by the end of this year, he said.
