The National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa (Numsa) has announced that it will no longer march against the alleged corruption at South African Airways (SAA) and SAA Technical.
This was on the back of a decision made by the labour court to suspend four SAA executives pending an investigation into corruption.
“Numsa members wanted to highlight the crisis of corruption at the airline,” said a spokesperson for the union. “Since we got what we wanted through the courts, we now no longer have to resort to a strike.”
The suspended executives are former SAA acting CEO, Musa Zwane, the head of Baseline Maintenance, Chaile Makaleng, head of procurement, Nontsasa Memela, and Princess Tshabalala who also worked in procurement.
The court has also ordered that SAA appoint an independent advocate – acceptable to both parties – to chair any further disciplinary hearings and Numsa must be allowed to give evidence during the investigation.
