The Gauteng Department of Roads and Transport will undertake a three-month-long rehabilitation project on Allandale Road (D51) towards Kyalami in Midrand.
Jacob Mamabolo, the Gauteng MEC for Public Transport and Roads Infrastructure, said that assessments had proved that the deterioration was caused by underground water and rock formation which required a complete rebuild of the road. "We are cognisant of the inconvenience that the closure will cause. However, the safety of road users remains a priority. We remain committed to providing cost-effective smart mobility, as this is a major road linking the M1 and other key main roads. Motorists are encouraged to use alternative routes through Waterfall to the R55," Mamabolo said.
The department would be launching a pothole mobile app where members of the public could report challenges experienced on the road, he added.
