In2Food Group officially opened a R381-million food facility on 5 April in the OR Tambo Special Economic Zone, the group said on Tuesday.
The 22 700 sqm facility is one of the largest fresh food produce facilities in the world and uses the world’s second-largest CO2 refrigeration plant installation.
According to In2Food CEO, Richard Cooper, the facility will offer 600 new jobs in addition to the existing 1 300 jobs.
Solar panels will produce 25% of the energy needed for the facility.
Natural gas will be used to run the boilers, staff kitchens and ablution geysers.
Gauteng Premier, David Makura, said the site illustrated what inclusivity and localisation of the industry in the country should look like.
The Department of Trade and Industry contributed R140 million to the development.
