DESPITE ALL the activity at the port, Richards Bay has plenty of land available for further development near the port, according to Portnet property manager Russell Newton. When Portnet needs more water area for berths, it seems all they have to do is dig out more land and let the water flow in.
This is in sharp contrast to other ports such as Durban, where water area is lost when Portnet requires additional terminal space and large infilling takes place. Richards Bay already has a water area of 1440 hectare, of which 695 ha is navigable, and this figure is set to grow with the port. Available land area tops out at 2236 ha.
