A WARNING COMES from forwarders Hellmann that the recently introduced 'open top container deposit' requires action by the receiver.
According to Debbie Nortje of Hellmann, this deposit is the result of landside damage being sustained by these rather tender boxes. The deposit covers repairs or replacement of bows (the tarpaulin supports) and tilts (tarpaulins), she says.
The refund of the deposit, she warned, is only made after the lines have received their deposit inspection report, clearing the container of damage.
It is therefore imperative that the receivers inspect the containers carefully on arrival, she says. They should also make a note on the transporter's delivery note of any damages or discrepancies related to the container.
Without doing so, they will have no proof later on to substantiate any claims against them.
