The Maputo Port Development Company (MPDC) has announced a major development for Mozambique's logistics sector with the signing of a contract to construct and manage a modern fruit terminal. This milestone, led by Mozambican firm Our Corridor Logistics (OCL), represents a $21 million investment and marks a significant step in strengthening the South Africa-Mozambique trade corridor.Set to occupy a 19 000-square-metre area, the terminal will be constructed from scratch and will include a complex of specialised warehouses equipped to store both frozen and room-temperature fruit. The facility will have an initial handling capacity of 60 000 tons per year, with plans for expansion as demand grows.Construction is expected to take approximately 14 months, after which the terminal will begin operations under a 25-year sub-concession agreement. Beyond its logistical importance, the project will create over 100 direct jobs, providing a vital boost to local employment and economic activity in the region.“This fruit terminal is part of the extension of the concession awarded by the Mozambican government in February this year,” said Osório Lucas, MPDC executive director. “It is also a ref lection of the Port of Maputo's commitment to sustainable development and the modernisation of Mozambique's logistics sector. We are investing in the future of our economy and creating the conditions for our country to be increasingly competitive and inclusive. The terminal is expected to play a pivotal role in facilitating the export of fresh produce, offering regional agricultural exporters modern storage and logistics solutions. Its location at the Port of Maputo provides a strategic gateway for South African produce to reach international markets swiftly and efficiently.“We are confident that the new fruit terminal will not only serve the important transit market, but will also boost the Mozambican agricultural sector, creating opportunities for local producers and strengthening the country's exports. This is an important step towards consolidating Mozambique as a relevant player in regional and international trade in agricultural products,” said OCL's managing director, Jorge Ferraz.lv
