A NEW container is about to be launched on the
local airfreight market offering significant benefits to
customers.
Technically named the AAY, its front opening
provides for easier loading and increased volumes, says
Transit Group’s Tim Snell.
“As the largest courier consolidator in South Africa,
The Transit Group uses containers on a daily basis –
and from a handling and security point of view they’re
the best invention,” says Snell.
It’s a win-win situation – for the airline the
container option allows a quicker check-in and loading
process, and the time-saving is passed on to the
customer.
“On top of that fragile freight arrives at its
destination in one piece because handling is cut down
to a minimum.”
Adding an extra safety element, Transit shrink
wraps all containers for protection from weather and
tampering.
Containers are used between Johannesburg and Port
Elizabeth and Cape Town, and Cape Town – Durban.
“But smaller areas like East London don’t attract
sufficient support for the airline to reach the required
pivot weight necessary to use a container,” says Snell.
“We encourage clients to support these smaller
areas in order to eliminate the breakage and possible
pilferage of loose loading, especially over this so-called
silly season and build-up to Christmas.”
