The Namibian Ports Authority (Namport) has provided a breakdown of the million tons of cargo that it handled during the April 2019 to March 2020 financial year – a 25% increase on the previous year.The largest growth came from a 100% increase in volumes along the Trans-Oranje Corridor, with 204 301 tons of manganese ore exported through Lüderitz Bay. To the north, the Walvis Bay-Ndola-Lubumbashi Development Corridor carried 633 705 tons of cargo, and the Trans-Cunene to Angola 23 762 tons.The Trans-Kalahari between Walvis Bay and Gauteng carried 321 431 ton of freight.Import volumes of ships’ spares, steel, sulphur, ammonium nitrate and steel were up year on year.Steel imports increased by 88% due to the various projects presently under way within the region and Namibia. Exports of ships’ spares increased significantly due to the increased number of vessels at anchorage for repairs and maintenance, according to Namport figures. There was a 26% growth in marble exports.
