DP World Maputo has launched a new rail siding – which can accommodate 200 TEUs (2 x full block trains) – to ramp up logistics efficiencies when the terminal’s capacity increases from 150 000-350 000 TEUs by the end of the year.
When the new five-hectare pavement is completed at the container terminal, this additional capacity, together with the company’s meticulous focus on productivity, will provide the hinterland region (South Africa, Swaziland, Zimbabwe) with an efficient gateway,” said Tejas Nataraj, CEO at DP World Maputo.
He said the company had successful completed the first rail trial last month by moving 50 x 40-foot containers from Johannesburg to Maputo where the container discharge operations took 120 minutes.
“This is a substantial step forward for the facilitation of Gauteng’s trade development as the rail service now provides the Gauteng market with the option of its imports and exports being connected with the nearest container terminal, paving the way for exponential growth derived from this new logistical capability,” Nataraj said.
