Turners Shipping has put its
money where its mouth is in
terms of skills development
with the
launch of
Turners
Training
Academy.
Although
it is early
days, Turners
Shipping MD
Blain Kondiah
has big
plans for the
academy: “We
have registered our training
materials with the Transport
Education and Training
Authority (Teta), and our goal
is to be able to provide training
outside of the company and
eventually employ full-time
training staff.”
So far around 150 Turners
Shipping staff have attended a
range of courses from customs
procedure to Incoterms. Their
exam papers are moderated
by an external examiner
and the results sent to the
Teta.
“We are planning to
extend the training
to customer
employees,” says the
academy’s training
coordinator, Rene
Naidoo. “Many
businesses don’t have the
resources to do extensive
in-house training, and with
the Teta endorsement and our
expertise and knowledge of the
industry the
academy is well
placed to offer
the necessary
training.”
As this is
an approved
Seta training
provider,
businesses
will be able to
get financial
support from
the Teta when their staff
attend the academy’s courses,
says Naidoo.
