The Department of Transport has restricted heavy duty vehicles from traveling on the westbound side of the M13 at Field's Hill near Durban between 16:00 and 18:00.
The initial plan was to ban heavy duty vehicles from the route altogether, but this was revised to banning heavy duty vehicles at peak traffic hours, according to councillor Tim Brauteseth.
The first step was a restriction on the eastbound section between 06:00 and 08:00, now followed by this latest restriction.
In terms of the agreement, DOT will also install additional signage along the M7 and M13 warning truck drivers of the new restrictions.
“DOT has also agreed to investigate the possibility of restricting heavy duty traffic to the left hand lane on Field's Hill, thus freeing up the middle and right hand lane for normal vehicular traffic,” said Brauteseth. “Long-term feasibility plans will include the widening the eastbound section as well as better lighting infrastructure on Field's Hill.”
