Ghana Revenue Authority Customs Division commissioner, Isaac Crentsil, has ordered all intermediary transactions between agents known as “goro boys” and customs officials to end.
Customs officials who continue working with these middle men will be faced with sanctions, according to the Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority (GPHA).
“The agents or “goro boys” at the Ghana-Burkina Faso borders previously charged an amount of 10 000 CFA [around US$18] for posing as middle men between customs officers and transit truck drivers or traders,” he said.
Crentsil has called this illegal and pointed out that it was needless as drivers could easily deal directly with customs officers. Traders and truck drivers will now no longer have to pay this fee.
GPHA director general, Paul Asare Ansah, said that removing such bottlenecks on the transit corridors would grow the transit business between Ghana and its landlocked neighbours.
