The experimental enviro-endeavour announced by CMA CGM and several maritime partners notched up another mark on its timeline of milestones earlier this month, when the French-owned cargo liner’s 5095 TEO vessel, White Shark, docked at the Port of Rotterdam to top up with biofuel.
The weekend visit to the busy Dutch harbour was much more than just a usual call at port, and data collected during refuelling is expected to significantly feed into existing knowledge about the possible scalability of sustainable marine fuel.
And, as the IMO2020 sulphur restriction of January next year nears, CMA CGM remains confident that its biofuel trial with Ikea Transport & Logistics Services, Rotterdam and marine environmentalists the GoodShipping Program will prove to be a game-changer for container shipping.
The biofuel, produced through a blend of forest residues and waste cooking oil products, will hopefully reduce well-to-propeller emissions by 80% to 90%, said GoodFuels, developers of the revolutionary product.
