On Friday the Portfolio Committee on Mineral Resources and Energy called on the department to swiftly appoint a new board for the South African Nuclear Energy Corporation (Necsa).
Sahlulele Luzipho, committee chairperson, said the appointment of a new Necsa board would be crucial in ensuring the stability of all entities within the energy sector following the resignation of the remaining board members last Wednesday.
“The committee is looking forward to an overarching and comprehensive turnaround strategy. We also welcome reassurances from the minister that appointing the new board will be prioritised,” said Luzipho.
“State entities have an important role to play in the economy and therefore cannot be mired in governance challenges.”
The previous board members cited a lack of urgency and decision making from the department, and energy minister Gwede Mantashe in particular, as the primary reason for their resignations.
A list of names for the new board is reportedly already with Cabinet. – Bjorn Vorster
