BPO gets serious about green issues

Environmental issues are one of the
key challenges facing port users.
“The TNPA is desperately driving
initiatives on improved environmental
practices, and we are 200% committed
to this initiative,” says Tarryn Lange,
regional manager KZN Stevedores for
Bidfreight Port Operations.
“A large part of our business
involves bulk products and these
operations directly impact on
environmental issues. Our challenge
is that there are many common user/
multi user berths and not every port
user is at the same level of commitment
in attending to the environmental
problems,” she told FTW. “Some of the
initiatives for which we have
already received recognition from the
TNPA include the
introduction of industrial
sweepers on the quayside to
collect bulk product sweepings and
covering the port railway tracks during
bulk operations to prevent product from
collecting within the tracks and causing
accelerated wear and tear on the tracks
and switch points.”
