THE INTRODUCTION of a fridge facility by British Airways at Johannesburg International Airport has reduced claims on perishable consignments to almost zero, says BA cargo manager for Africa, Stuart Preston.
The facility was opened in November last year and can accommodate up to 16 AAU type units at any one time.
The results speak for themselves, says Preston. Claims have dropped dramatically and shelf life at the final destination has been increased significantly.
Perishable shipments are placed in the fridge immediately after weighing, and then moved to the aircraft at the last possible moment. The fridge temperature can be adjusted to suit different perishables, giving greater flexibility, he said.
