STEADY GROWTH in cargo volumes has been the pattern for Air Namibia over the past two years according to general sales and handling agent ACR.
While much of the cargo to and from Namibia previously moved by overnight road freight, the airline is finding perishables to be one of the top export commodities from Johannesburg to Windhoek. “With two flights a day there is no shortage of space,” an ACR spokesman told FTW. “The early morning flights from Johannesburg carry small amounts of courier material, as the flight arrives in Windhoek early enough to allow the courier agents to distribute to the clients.”
With three flights a day out of Cape Town, the airline finds the early flight to Windhoek carrying much of the courier materials and newspapers - all time sensitive products that must reach their destination as early as possible. “The smaller flights to the coastal towns have recently started to carry the newspapers on the early morning flights,” he added.
Catering for the wide range of commodities on the Europe route, Air Namibia’s flights to Frankfurt arrive at final destination with an average cargo payload of 40 to 50 tonnes. “This is cargo originating in both Cape Town and Windhoek and varies from fish, flowers and fruit to cars and motor vehicle spares.”
