A refrigerated vessel carrying South African fruit, Wild Cosmos, bound for the Port of Tallinn in Estonia, is on course and was tracked south-east of the coast of Gotland in the Baltic Sea after it was involved in a collision at sea with a Dutch cargo vessel, the Helge.
Friday’s accident off Ringkobing on Denmark’s Jutland peninsula almost caused the Helge to sink as it immediately started taking on water.
Seven seafarers leapt overboard into the frigid water of the North Sea but were all rescued by a Royal Danish Navy helicopter.
The captain of the Helge was admitted to a nearby hospital with cuts sustained from broken glass, but is out of danger.
No other injuries from the incident were reported.
Although the Helge started submerging in little time, maritime authorities managed to prevent it from sinking, after which it was towed to the southern Danish Port of Esbjerg on Saturday morning.
The Swedish owners of the Helge, Erik Thun AB, said it remained unclear what had caused the accident and that investigations were under way.
The collision is the second serious large-ship incident at sea in less than two weeks.
