Construction of the world’s first fast ferry powered by natural gas began this week at the Armon de Gijón shipyard, Spanish shipping company Baleària revealed.
According to Baleària, the Eleanor Roosevelt fast ferry will accommodate 1 200 passengers and warehouse capacity of up to 500 linear metres of cargo and 250 cars – alternatively 450 cars.
The 123-metre vessel is estimated to reach a service speed of 35 knots and maximum speed of more than 40 knots.
Investment in the project is estimated at more than €200 million and construction is expected to conclude in 2020.
Baleària is set to convert six of its existing vessels to LNG operation.
