Today (Monday) the minister of Transport, Joe Maswanganyi, conducted a site visit of the N1 infrastructure upgrade project and the Windermere Rail Network Control Centre in the Western Cape.
The visit was intended to monitor the progress of the R487-million road project – between Plattekloof Road and the Old Oak Interchange – which is expected to significantly reduce congestion and travel time.
The N1 road upgrade project includes the addition of an extra lane on both sides of the freeway, new auxiliary lanes, intersection improvements and repairs to bridges - and is expected to be completed in April 2019.
The visit was also aimed at monitoring the progress of construction of the rail centre which the minister noted would assist in addressing poor levels of train reliability and challenges in railway infrastructure and technology.
