The Johannesburg Roads Agency (JRA) is planning to rehabilitate and reconstruct six bridges damaged by heavy rainfall this year.
Managing director Sean Phillips said the move followed flood impact assessments that looked at the extent of the damage and impact.
“Site visits indicated the need for emergency rehabilitation and reconstruction of the six bridges. The extent of damage is estimated at R113.5 million,” added Phillips.
According to the Gauteng Department of Roads and Transport, severe weather conditions made road infrastructure unsafe and in one case resulted in complete erosion of the foundation.
Repairs will take place on the Spring Road, Joe Nhlanhla, Belgrave, Bridge Road and Cork Avenue bridges as well as the bridge on 432 Modderfontein road. The department said that repairs were scheduled to begin in July with the exception of the Cork Avenue Bridge on which reconstruction has already begun.
Two of the bridges will be demolished and reconstructed as the sewer lines in both bridges are exposed and immediate stabilisation is needed to make sure that sewage does not spill into the streams. The JRA said that this would be carried out at a cost of R30 million.
