Seven border posts connecting Kenya and its East African neighbours – forming part of the One Stop Border Posts (OSBP) initiative – are now complete. This has resulted in a 23% increase in trade within the region, according to media reports.
“The efficiency they give will lead to increased intra-regional trade in East Africa. They also result in improved efficiency of customs services and other government agencies by avoiding unnecessary duplication of clearance procedures,” Tanzania’s Prime Minister Kassim Majaliwa was quoted by Kenyan newspaper, the Daily Nation, as saying.
The border posts have eased the custom clearance processes with traders now queuing only once to exit and enter countries, he added.
