Port users define their relationship with Namport
WALVIS BAY Port Users Association chose the eve of the port’s 10th anniversary celebrations to elect a new committee, with Manica Group Namibia managing director Thomas Templin taking on the role of chairman.
“I believe the committee will be a valuable and vital force in developments in the port,” said Nico Oberholzer, who was re-elected to head the Association’s tariff committee.
“I’ve been on the committee for the past seven years, and it hasn’t always been plain sailing. Disagreements have constantly emerged from some sectors, but it is important now that we should become a strategic partner with Namport rather than a negative opposition.
“We depend on the smooth running of the port for the good of our own businesses. My own company, TRT Shipping, is involved at various levels. So is that of our new chairman. There are others like us, so it is essential we work closely with Namport.
“We at TRT have the Taiwanese trawler fleet calling here regularly for dry-docking and repairs. Work and planning is needed on the synchrolift activities and more space is needed for berthing. Our voices can help the authorities.”
TRT Shipping changed its name from the previous Pan Ocean Shipping two years ago. It has Ôsailed ahead successfully ever since’ he says.
“We have obtained ISO certification which has proved invaluable when going after the big tenders. Our airfreight division has also been very successful, especially when replacement ships’ spares are needed urgently. These are flown in from overseas to Windhoek and trucked to Walvis Bay with little delay. We’ve had no problems in the logistic chain.
“The ups and downs in the fishing industry have been addressed effectively by the authorities, and the year ahead is filled with bright prospects.”
