ACTIVITIES IN the port of Port Elizabeth will
not be replaced by neighbouring Ngqura which
is due to come on stream before 2010, says
Transnet Port Terminals chief executive Tau
Morwe.
He told FTW that the Port Elizabeth harbour
“will be here for some time to come”, and that
Port Terminals was continuing to invest in it.
The port is to receive 11 new straddle
carriers, a post Panamax crane by February 2008
and the car terminal will be doubled from 2 000
to 4 000-car capacity.
In addition Port Terminals is planning to
provide value-added services such as the fitting
of car radios and trim, as well as minor panel
beating (de-dinging).
The post Panamax crane will bring the total
number of gantries in Port Elizabeth to five.
