Unit 1 of Eskom’s Kusile Power Station project marked a milestone last week when it achieved full load, according to a statement from the parastatal.
This means that the unit is running at full design and operational capacity (800MW), putting it on the road to commercial operation.
According to the energy body, construction is continuing on the remaining five Kusile units located near eMahleni, Mpumalanga.
Kusile – meaning “the dawn has come”– is South Africa’s largest multibillion-rand construction project and will be the fourth largest coal-fired power station in the world, according to Eskom.
Once complete it will produce a total of 4 800MW.
