There’s a growing move towards the use of video telematics to improve driver behaviour, according to Anand Verma, a senior director at WNS Global Services SA. Verma told delegates at the Transport Forum in Cape Town recently that the video telematics market was anticipated to hit $231.63 billion by 2025, growing annually at around 24.7%. This, he said, was due to the
increasing need for better fleet and asset management – and also to improve security and fuel efficiency. According to Verma advanced telematics-based solutions have already proven to be highly useful for fleet management to track and manage assets. Not only can it be used to determine fuel usage and vehicle condition from anywhere and on a realtime basis, vehicle telematics also makes it easier for the
insurance companies to track driver behaviour and offer insurance solutions accordingly. As these products continue to be developed, Verma said in the future one would be able to predict driving behaviour and events based on past data. Depending on fleet preference, cameras are mounted front-facing, driverfacing, with side-view and backup options available. “Videos don’t lie,” said
Verma. With the use of video fleet managers can now see exactly what has happened during an incident. Whilst a variety of programmes are available and parameters can be set according to a fleet’s preference, users can watch video from any point in time that they choose. According to Verma WNS has rolled out its video capability programmes in Europe and the US very successfully. “We are involved
in the automation of the video review process and the analytics programmes in particular,” he said, indicating that it was being used particularly in the heavy truck and bus industries to prevent accidents and subsequent injuries. Improved turnaround times, reduction in cost of operations and improved customer satisfaction were additional benefits, he added.
