Pretoria's N4 motorway, which was temporarily closed overnight to allow Eskom and its contractors to replace the electricity pylons that collapsed on the road last weekend, has reopened.
The City of Tshwane advised motorists to use alternative routes as the road was closed from 9pm on 17 April to allow for the reinstatement of the 132 kilovolt line.
"Sanral has notified the City of Tshwane of the closure of the N4 east motorway between Solomon Mahlangu Drive and Simon Vermooten Road for emergency works to reinstate a double circuit 132 KV line.
“The road will reopen when the work has been completed. It is expected that the work will not take more than six hours," the City said in a statement.
The closure occurred where vandalised power lines collapsed onto the road surface last Sunday, leading to a massive power outage that affected large parts of Pretoria East, Pretoria North, and a portion of the southern part of the city for several days.
Federation of East and Southern African Road Transport Associations executive director, Mike Fitzmaurice, told Freight News on Tuesday morning that the road had reopened after Eskom completed its overnight repairs to the power line.
He said the road had been cleared of debris earlier so traffic was able to move on the motorway over the past week.
