US Presidential hopeful Donald Trump, who is threatening to institute tariff increases of up to 60% on Chinese imports if elected on November 5, has imported 120 000 Bibles printed in Hangzhou at a cost of $342 000.
Branded as ‘God Bless The USA’, the Bibles cost less than $3 per unit and are resold at $59.99, while signed copies go for as much as $1 000 each.
Trump's promotion of these Bibles coincides with his campaign rhetoric against China, where he has previously accused the country of unfair trade practices and job theft.
Notably, the Bibles also include various US historic documents and have drawn criticism from some Christian groups for their content and commercialization.
In a promotional video, Trump emphasized the importance of religion in America, stating that "the biggest thing we have to bring back in America... is our religion".
In the video he encourages viewers to purchase the Bibles.
Interestingly, the sales are conducted through a website that claims no political affiliation but uses Trump's name under a paid licensing agreement with a company he reportedly owns.
